Springfield, Mass. -- January 17, 2009 -- Led by record-setting diver Brian Sobel, and a winning meet-ending final 200-yard relay, the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team rallied to tie NYU this afternoon, 121.5 to 121.5, in a swim meet at Springfield's Art Linkletter Natatorium.
It all came down to the final relay, with SC needing the 11 points for the winning effort (1:26.58), plus the two points for a third-place effort (1:34.27) to offset the four points that NYU received by finishing second (1:27.15). NYU also finished fourth in that event with a time of 1:35.30. Finishing first for the Pride were Matt Manoni, Tony Bruno, Andrew Blakesley, and Greg Pearsall.
Earlier in the meet, Springfield sophomore Brian Sobel established a school record in the 3-meter dive with 347.25 points. The old record was set by former SC national champion Mike Shaw in 2006 with a point total of 344.10.
Other winners for Springfield in this meet included Pearsall in the 50-yard free (22.07), Brian Way in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.05), and Ryan Mackstutis in the 200-yard back (2:01.27) and the 200-yard breast (2:13.61). Sobel also captured the 1-meter dive with a point total of 277.35.
Tomorrow, Sunday the 18th, Springfield will travel to MIT to face a pair of NEWMAC foes in MIT and Coast Guard at 1 pm.
