Honolulu, Hawaii - January 14, 2012 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team dropped its final match of the Outrigger Invitational as the Lewis University swept the Pride in the Stan Sherriff Center on Saturday. The Flyers were victorious by the scores of 25-20, 25-18, 27-25.
Lewis, who was ranked ninth in the country in this week's AVCA Division I/II poll, now stands at 2-1 The Pride finished their Hawaiian trip 0-3 as the only Division III team to ever play in the Outrigger.
Freshman Angel Perez was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts over the weekend and tallied a team-best eight kills in the loss to Lewis. Greg Falcone continued his impressive play to start the 2012 campaign as he posted seven kills on nine errorless attempts to go along with a team-best four blocks. Mike Becker was credited with 20 assists as the Pride hit .229 in the contest.
Greg Petty hit .619 with a match-high 15 kills to lead the Flyers, while Geoff Powell added 11 kills and two aces. Yiwei Zhou notched six kills, and setter Eric Butch had 33 assists and guided the Lewis offense to a .359 attack percentage.
The third set was the closest as it had 17 ties and four lead changes. After Lewis evened the set at 12-all, Springfield opened up 5-2 burst to earn a 17-14 lead and force the Flyers into a timeout. A kill from Tyler Tanaka at 19-16 allowed the Pride to maintain its three-point lead, only to have the Flyers rally to even things at 20. The teams traded sideout points before consecutive kills from Powell gave Lewis a 25-24 lead. Mike Pelletier responded with a kill, but a Springfield service error and Lewis double block ended the frame.
Springfield will now travel back home and will not play again until January 24th when it hosts Sacred Heart at 7:00 pm
