SUNY Cortland Wins 2001 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov 12, 2001 – Freshman Ashley Ostrander’s goal at 16:41 of the first half proved to be the difference as SUNY Cortland defeated Messiah (Pa.) College, 1-0, to win the 2001 NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Championship at Springfield College.
The championship is the third for the Red Dragons (19-2), who have made four trips to the national championship match since 1993. SUNY Cortland is now tied for second place all-time with William Smith with three national titles. The College of New Jersey, which dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Messiah in Saturday’s national semifinal, is first among NCAA Division III programs with nine championships.
The Falcons (17-5) finish as runners-up for the third time. Messiah also reached the final in 1984 and 1995.
Ostrander scored the game winner off a rebound of her own shot. Messiah freshman goalkeeper Erica Nelson saved the initial attempt, but Ostrander collected the rebound near the right side of the cage and knocked it home.
Nelson made eight saves for Messiah. Senior Becky Gillette made four stops for the Red Dragons.
