Coast Guard Eliminates Baseball, 6-5
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 28, 2003 – Coast Guard Academy senior third baseman Aaron Holler went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Bears eliminated Springfield College, 6-5, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
The Bears (17-15) travel to Wheaton to take on the defending conference champions tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard needs to beat Wheaton on Tuesday and again on Wednesday to win the NEWMAC Championship.
For Springfield (15-14), sophomore right fielder
John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior right-hander
Brian Puchalski (South Deerfield, Mass.) hurled 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
Coast Guard freshman right-hander Cory Anderson hurled seven and one-third innings, giving up just two earned runs on four hits, to improve to 3-4. With Coast Guard clinging to a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and two on, freshman left-hander Mike Jarbeau came in on relief and ended the inning with a one-pitch double play. Junior pitcher Matt Smith picked up his school record tying third save after pitching a scoreless ninth.
