PLATTSBURGH, N.Y., September 10, 2006 - Springfield College junior forward Colin Cook (Wilbraham, Mass.) was named the Cardinal Classic's Most Offensive Player (MOP) as the Pride battled host and third-ranked SUNY Plattsburgh to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of soccer this afternoon in the championship match of the 2006 Cardinal Classic.
After regulation, two overtimes, and still no score, SC and Plattsburgh went to penalty kicks to decide the winner. It was the Cardinals who prevailed in the shootout, 4-3, but the Pride did snap Plattsburgh State's 15-game regular-season winning streak, as the match goes in the books as a tie. SC is now 1-2-2 on the season.
Joining Cook on the All-Tournament Team this weekend for the Pride was senior captain Matt Lee (Lincoln, R.I.). Junior goalkeeper Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, Del.) recorded his second straight shutout on the weekend, saving three Cardinal shots on goal during the 110 minutes of play in Sunday's championship match. For the weekend, Driscoll saved a total of five shots and didn't allow a goal in 200 minutes of action, as he has now compiled a 1-0-1 record on the season.
Plattsburgh State is already the third nationally-ranked Division III team that SC has faced in the early going in 2006. The Pride next returns home to face Wesleyan University, who is ranked 10th in Division III New England according to the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll, in a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 13th, in a 5:00 p.m. start.
