Springfield, Mass. – April 16, 2011 – The Springfield College men’s track and field team cruised to a win its three-team meet at Blake Track on Saturday afternoon. The Pride finished with 185.5 points, Coast Guard finished with 122.5, and WPI finished with 94.
Nickel Hay led the way for Springfield with a win in the 400 meter dash. Hay’s time of 49.40 seconds was just ahead of teammate Chris Quetant who took second in 50.49 seconds. Hay also helped out in the 4x100 meter relay, as the team of Tom Brognano, Hay, Kyle Brown, and Garrett Sharnick won the event in 43.22 seconds. Hay was also a part of Springfield’s first place foursome in the 4x400 meter event. He teamed up with Kevin Coyle, Kevin Behlmer, and Quetant to win the event in 3:23.05 seconds.
Brian Fuller won the 3000 meter steeplechase event in 9:12.64 and teammate Zach Pietras filled in second place at 9:48.37. The Pride men also fared well in other distance events. Ryan O’Connell took the 800 meter at 2:00.34, while Anthony Salvucci finished first in the 5000 meter event with a time of 15:28.83.
Others that ran well for Springfield included Troy French in the 1500 meter run. French finished in third place, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:16.00. Brown took second place in the 100 meter dash at 11.84 seconds and finished second in the 200 meter at 23.56 seconds. Matt Scully finished third in the 800 meter at 2:02.17. Behlmer continued to contribute to the Pride scoring with a second place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Behlmer clocked in at 57.48 seconds to earn the points. Stephen Creamer helped out in the 5000 meter, taking second at 15:34.76.
The Pride men solidified their victory with solid performances in the field events. Joe Bonano got the win in the shot put, throwing 13.75 meters for a comfortable victory. Kevin Ross won the high jump with a leap of 6’1.25” and Coyle continued to enjoy success in the long jump with a win at 7.12 meters. Coyle would also take second place in the triple jump at 14.21 meters.
Others that competed well for Springfield included Dylan Brock in the triple jump. Brock placed third behind Coyle with a jump of 12.62 meters. He also scored in the long jump, taking third at 6.31 meters. In the javelin, Ryan Ux and Parker Ashton-Youngs finished second and third, respectively. Ux threw for a distance of 54.42 meters and Ashton-Youngs fired the javelin 51.2 meters. Jonathan Nardi contributed with a second place finish in the shot put at 13.04 meters, and Michael Cataldo took third in the discus throw at 36.9 meters.
The Pride will be back home next Saturday for the Springfield Invitational.
