Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes Fifth (of 14) at the ECAC Division III Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - December 5, 2006 - Junior Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) finished first in two events to help the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team to a third-place finish out of 16 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York this past weekend (Dec. 1-3).

At the same time, on the women's side, sophomore Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) finished first in one event to lead SC to a fifth-place finish of 14 competing teams at the same event.

Burch finished first in the 100-free with a time of 45.62 seconds, which qualified him for the NCAA’s at year’s end. He also finished first in the 100-backstroke (54.03). Burch also earned points for SC by finishing in second place in the 50-free (21.51).

The only other first place finisher for the men was senior Paul McCloskey (Brookfield, CT). McCloskey finished first in the 200-free (1:44.53). He also finished second in the 500-free (4:47.64), and seventh in the 100-free (47.81).

Other heavy contributors for the men included senior Ryan Mahoney (Westford, Mass.) who had a second-place finish in the 100-breast (1:00.13), and a fifth-place finish in the 200-breast (2:15.43). Senior Chris LeCompte (Londonderry, N.H.) finished fourth in the 200-butterfly (1:59.71), fourth in the 200-free (1:44.92), and seventh in the 500-free (4:56.71). Sophomore Anthony Bruno (Southbury, Conn.) finished fourth in the 500- free (4:55.60), and seventh in the 200-free (1:47.15). Sophomore Greg Pearsall (Litchfield, Conn.) finished fifth in the 100-free (47.69) and seventh in the 50-free (21.85). Freshman Ryan Mackstutis (Torrington, Conn.) finished seventh in the 100- breast (1:02.45), and eighth in the 200-breast (2:15.43). Junior Scott Teti (Torrington, Conn.) finished seventh in the 100-butterfly (53.68).

On the women's side, three swimmers placed in the top eight for multiple events. Price led the SC women, finishing first in the 200-back, second in the 100-free, third in the 50- free, and fifth in the 100-back. Joining Price with top-eight finishes were sophomore Kallie Pottle (Brewer, Maine) and junior Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.) Pottle finished third in the 200-backstroke and fifth in the 100-backstroke. Sheahan finished seventh in the 1650-freestyle and eighth in the 500-free.

The Springfield College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will next compete Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon (1 pm) in a meet against Middlebury College at the Art Linkletter Natatorium on the Springfield College campus.
