Field Hockey Downs Westfield, 2-1, In SC Invitational Tournament Opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 6, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore midfielder
Sarah Brooker (Auburn, Maine) scored the game-winning goal with 11:33 left in the second half, to give the Pride a 2-1 win over Westfield State in the first round of the Springfield Invitational at Benedum Field.
Springfield will take on Hartwick in the final tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
The Owls got on the board first with a goal from senior forward
Theresa Yackone (East Longmeadow, Mass.) with 1:38 remaining before halftime. SC responded quickly after the break when junior back
Kim Stevens (Knox, Maine) scored off a penalty corner to tie the game 1-1 with 25:43 left in the game.
Westfield State junior goalkeeper
Kendra Newell (Groveland, Mass.) made 12 saves.
Harwick 4, Endicott 1
In the second game, junior forward
Kelly Cooman (Sherburne, N.Y.) scored three goals to lead Harwick College over Endicott, 4-1. Senior forward
Heather Yerkie (Vernon, N.Y.) assisted all three of Cooman’s goals in the contest.
