Swimming & Diving Too Much For Hartwick, Union

ONEONTA, N.Y., Jan. 10, 2004 – Springfield College’s men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams swept a tri-meet with Hartwick and Union on Saturday at Hartwick’s Moyer Pool.
On the women’s side, the Pride improved to 6-1 overall by beating Hartwick, 139-90, and Union, 154-73.
Senior
Beth Byron (Haverhill, Mass.) won the 200 breastroke (2:33.7), and teamed with senior
Jessica Defoe (Monson, Mass.), junior All-American
Megan Skinner (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore
Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) on SC’s first-place 400-medley relay team (4:13.99). Skinner won the 200 freestyle (1:59.15) and the 200 backstroke (2:12.86). Sophomore
Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up a win in the 50 freestyle (27.75) followed closely by Phillips (25.97). SC’s 400-freestyle relay team of Phillips, freshman
Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.), senior
Marybeth Kuliga (Sanford, Maine) and Hart swam to first (3:49.2).
The SC men defeated Hartwick, 131-104, and Union, 146-68, to go to 4-2 on the season.
Sophomore
Dan Moran (Wilbraham, Mass.) won two individual events: the 500 freestyle (4:51.62) and the 1000 freestyle (10:09.01). Junior
Tim Ryan (Hatboro, Pa.) placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:02.88) and second in the 200 I.M. (2:04.04). Ryan and Moran, along with junior
Blake Leshnick (Suffern, N.Y.) and freshman
Ryan Mahoney (Westford, Mass.), were victorious in the 400-medley relay (3:19.41). Sophomore All-American
Mike Shaw (Westfield, Mass.) won both diving events.

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos
Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 28th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2012-2013. The current NEWMAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions.
