Second Quarter Surge Keys Union's 10-4 Upset of Men's Lacrosse

Schenectady, N.Y. - March 15, 2014 - Despite an early 3-0 lead, the Springfield College men's lacrosse lost its first game of the season after a 10-4 setback at Union College on Saturday afternoon.

Springfield, ranked 9th in this week's USILA National Poll, drops to 4-1 on the year. For Union, the Dutchmen improved to 4-1 as they picked up their second win over a top-10 opponent this week.

Connor Nash (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) made 15 saves on the afternoon, while Ryan Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist. Ryon Lynch (Frederdick, Md.) had a team-best four ground balls.

Jack Scheufele scored three goals and Rob Santangelo and Richard Gregory added two each to lead Union College to the victory.

Unon had a 46-26 shot advantage on the day and goaltender Stefan Basile made 14 saves in his 57 minutes, 39 seconds of work. Gregory and Greg Mooney each had seven shots and Connor Hall had six ground balls. Hall won 11 of 16 face offs for the Dutchmen.

Devin Abad (East Longmeadow, Mass.)opened the scoring for the visitors at 10:23, and Springfield scored two late goals in the first period to earn an early 3-0 advantage. Bryce Serriello's (Cape Cod, Mass.) netted his 10th of the year with 13 seconds left in the first period and Murphy's added another just 10 seconds later to put the visitors in control early.

However, Union scored all five goals in the second period, outshooting the Pride, 18-4. Santangelo tallied the hosts first strike at 11:35 and Cameron Slatton scored at 10:41. Scheufele then scored his first two goals of the season, tying the game at 3-3 at 9:546 then giving Union the lead for good at 3:41. Santangelo made it 5-3 with four seconds remaining in the half.

Dylon Tripodi scored a man up goal 4:49 into the third period, but Matt Fleisher (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) got Springfield closer at 6-4 at 8:41. Union opened it up with Gregory at 7:55, Jake Quinn at 5:33, and another from Gregory with 24 seconds left in the third quarter.

The lone goal of the fourth quarter came from Scheufele with his third of the day with 2:21 left to play.

Springfield will play yet another nationally-ranked team this upcoming Wednesday when it plays Endicott in Florida.
