Wrestling Looks To Continue National Success
The 2002-2003 Pride, which features two returning national qualifiers and nine conference place winners, looks to make its sixth top-10 finish in the NCAA Division III Tournament in the last eight seasons after finishing 13th last winter.
Springfield’s captains,
Bill Ivatts and
Keith Poloskey, will play a major role in the team’s attempt to win its sixth conference title in seven years. “Bill and Keith have all proven themselves on a national level," head coach
Daryl Arroyo said. "We expect big things from all of them. We also have some solid returnees who we are excited about getting back into the lineup.
Poloskey finished fifth at last year’s NCAA Division III Championship at 141 pounds after placing third at the 2000 championship. Ivatts made his first appearance at the national tournament last season after winning his first NECCWA crown at 149 pounds. Other NECCWA place-winners returning are:
Mike McWilliams (third, 174),
Rocco Brancati (fourth, 141),
Tim O’Donnell (fourth, 157),
Mark Mendes (fifth in 2000, 157),
Tom Medonis (sixth, 184) and
Scott Fay (sixth, 197).
“We have a nice crop of upperclassmen back along with nine of 10 starters,” said Arroyo. “For the first time in several seasons, we shouldn’t have to put any freshmen in our starting lineup. We are looking to place again at the national dual championship, win the NECCWA Championship and get back into the top-10 at nationals.”
