Field Hockey Shuts Out Smith College, 4-0, in First Round of NEWMAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 28, 2006 – Springfield College junior forward Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) scored her fifth goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in the 14th minute of play (13:21) as the second-seeded Pride shut out No. 7 Smith College, 4-0, on a rain-soaked Benedum Field this afternoon in the first round of the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament.

With the win, SC (15-5) will face the winner of No. 3 Wheaton College and No. 6 MIT in a game that has been postponed until Sunday afternoon, October 29th at Wheaton College. Top-seeded Wellesley College held on to defeat No. 8 Mount Holyoke College this afternoon, 2-1, so the Pride will face either Wheaton or MIT next Saturday, November 4th, at Wellesley in a time to be determined.

In today’s quarterfinal action at SC, Jenkins put the Pride up early with the 14th-minute score, and then junior forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) made the score 2-0 with her 14th goal of the year at the 16:03 mark. The score remained 2-0 after the first 35 minutes of action.

In the second half, SC tacked on two more goals as freshman back Emilyann Murray (Boonton, N.J.) and sophomore forward Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) scored their second and 20th goals of the season, respectively, for the 4-0 final.

The Pioneers end their 2006 season with a 6-11 overall record as freshman goalkeeper Margaret Winter compiled 23 saves in the loss. Pride junior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) improved her overall record to 14-5 on the year without making a save in the first stanza. Junior goalie Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) saved two shots in the second half to preserve the SC shutout.
