Women's Soccer Opens '03 Season Thursday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 3, 2003 -- The SC women's soccer team opens the 2003-2004 athletic season when it hosts Western New England on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. at Brock-Affleck Field.
The match kicks off a busy week of Pride athletics. The eight-team SC Women's Volleyball Invitational begins on Friday at 5 p.m. and continues Saturday, and the field hockey team faces Westfield State on Saturday in the opening match of the SC Invitational on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Despite the departure of seven seniors from last fall’s women's soccer squad, coach
John Gibson will field a veteran team hungry to take the next step towards an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Pride looks to return to its 2001 form when it compiled a school-record 14-6-1 mark, which included second place in both the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and post-season tournament.
Leading the offensive attack will be juniors
Molly Desroches and
Jessica Kovacs. Desroches was named a 2001 All-NEWMAC selection after finishing second on the team with 23 points (7 goals, 9 assists), while Kovacs tied for second on the team in scoring last fall.
Senior captain
Colleen McGovern, a NEWMAC All-Conference pick as a sophomore, and senior
Asheley Bardin return to anchor in the midfield, along with senior
Laura Harwood. Senior captain
Kim Capodiece returns as the team’s top sweeper.
