SC Alum Suzie Snyder Wins World Title in Maui XTerra Off Road Triathlon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – November 1, 2006 – Former Springfield College athlete Suzie Snyder won the 2006 World Championship in the Xterra Off Road Triathlon Road Race in her age group in Maui his past Sunday (October 29).

It was Snyder’s third age group (20-24) victory in this grueling triathlon in the last four years. She also captured this title in 2003 and 2004. She placed second in 2005.

Her winning time this year was three hours, 36 minutes, and 19 seconds. That was a full 53 minutes ahead of the second-place competitor. Broken down, her 1.5- kilometer swim time was 24 minutes, 21 seconds; her 30-kilometer bike time was two hours, 12 minutes, and four seconds; and her 11-kilometer mountain trail run time was 59 minutes, 54 seconds.

What makes this triathlon so special is the bike and mountain road terrain, comprised mostly of dusty volcanic ash.

A native of Averill Park, N.Y., Snyder received two degrees from Springfield College, her bachelor of science in 2004 and her master’s in 2006. She competed in track as a pole vaulter from 2001 through 2004. She also ran the 800 meters and competed in the pentathlon. She ran cross country as a senior in the fall of 2003, and as a grad student in the fall of 2004. Suzie served as a grad assistant coach in track and field her last two years as well.

“I couldn’t be more pleased for Suzie,” said her former coach, Jim Pennington, SC’s current women’s cross country and track and field head coach. “As a cross country runner, she often finished second- or third-best on the team. And in track and field, she is still the school record-holder in the pole vault. She has proven to be an amazing athlete and a tremendous representative for Springfield College.”
