“Springfield College is very pleased to be chosen the inaugural host for this championship," said Director of Athletics Cathie Schweitzer. "The ultimate outcome of hosting this championship will be to create an atmosphere for the student-athletes that they will remember for a lifetime. We understand the opportunity to host this championship will be an institutional commitment, not just a commitment from the Department of Athletics.”
Division III formally adopted the NCAA men’s volleyball championship as the Association’s 89th championship at the 2011 Convention. The NCAA has sponsored a National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship (all divisions) since 1970, but sponsorship of men’s volleyball in Division III recently eclipsed the 50 institution mark required for a single division to conduct its own championship.
Prior to the NCAA adopting a Division III Championship, Springfield College had won six Molten Division III Men’s Invitational Championships. Starting in 1997, this Championship was formed due to a need for a culminating and postseason event for NCAA Division III men's volleyball. Springfield College served as a host of that event on three different occasions, including in 1998, 2001, and 2008.
“In my time here serving as President, the College has been proud to show, through its actions, that we are a part of, and not apart from, the community,” explained Dr. Richard B. Flynn. “This is a relationship that serves us well whenever we host championships at the conference, regional, and national levels.”
It was originally speculated that the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball championship would encompass an eight-team tournament at a single site conducted over the third weekend in April. But since the championship was adopted, several Division III schools have indicated interest in adding men’s volleyball, which would increase the tournament's bracket size and require the championship to be played over two weekends rather than one.
The bracket size will not be officially determined until sport-sponsorship numbers are fully known this fall. The Division III Championships Committee approved conducting the finals of the new championship over the final weekend of April beginning in 2012, anticipating that a preliminary round would be conducted over the third weekend in April.
