Annapolis, Md. - January 19, 2013 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team opened the season on Saturday at Macdonough Hall competing in the Navy Open. The Pride finished in fifth in the competition with a 391.15.
No. 4 Penn State ran away with the title by posting a team score of 440.9. No. 14 William & Mary followed with a 409.4 and No. 12 Temple registered a 407.05. Navy posted a team score of 398.8, while the Pride rounded out the team scoring.
In the floor exercise, Chris Jost finished 14th with a 13.5, while teammate Killian O'Brien placed 18th with a 13.1. Jon Zirna had Springfield's best finish on the pommel horse, totaling a score of 13.00 to take 17th.
In the still rings, Ryan Ponce began the season with a 15th-place finish, registering a score of 13.45. Sam Docherty had a solid showing in the floor exercise, posting a score of 14.15 to place 15th. Jost followed close behind with a 14.05 to take 16th.
The parallel bars featured the Pride's top individual finish of the day as Docherty took 12th with a mark of 13.45. Ponce added a 17th-place finish after notching a 13.00. In addition, O'Brien added a score of 13.35 on the high bar to take 20th.
In the all-around competition, Tucker McClure ended the evening in seventh place after totaling a score of 76.650.
Springfield will compete next Sunday when it hosts Temple at 1:00 pm
