Men's Soccer Falls To MIT, 1-0, In NEWMAC Semifinals

NORTON, Mass., November 9, 2002 - - Springfield College freshman Steve Paige (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Tom Bowden (Havertown, Pa.) combined for eight saves but MIT beat the Pride, 1-0, in a semifinal round game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship at Wheaton College this afternoon.

With the victory, second-seeded MIT will face fourth-seeded Babson, which beat host Wheaton earlier, tomorrow afternoon on Keefe Field at 1:00 p.m.

The Engineers attacked with offensive pressure early in the opening half, while the sixth-seeded Pride stayed on the defensive for most of the first stanza.

In the second half, Pride junior Ryan Lavner (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove a shot from 20 yards out that looked destined to beat MIT goalie Josheph Sikoscow, only to see the ball deflect off the crossbar. Three minutes later, SC junior Andrew Edwards (Brookfield, Conn.) also watched his shot bounce off the crossbar. MIT Nick Nestle scored in the 63rd minute, the goal which proved to be the game-winner.

The Pride concludes its season with a 6-13-1 mark.
