SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 4, 2003 -- Springfield College opens the 2003-2004 season on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. with the Springfield Invitational. The Pride hosts Southern Connecticut, MIT and Vermont (club team) along with area club gymnasts. This intercollegiate meet caps a day of gymnastics in Blake Arena beginning at 10 a.m.
Head Coach
Steve Posner’s deep Springfield College squad expects to have another championship season on both the regional and national scenes.
“With a host of talented returners and several strong freshmen, we’re optimistic heading into the season,” said Posner. “We’re looking forward to defending our New England Championship, and I’m hopeful that several of our gymnasts qualify in their events. We’ll also attempt to improve upon our national ranking and to place higher at the ECAC and national meets.”
Seniors
Tim Goetz and
Mike Smith return to lead the ’03-’04 Pride. Goetz was named an All-American in 2002 after finishing third on the vault and floor exercise at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. Smith, a 2003 USAG All-American and a Verizon Academic All-District selection, looks to improve upon a seventh-place finish on both the floor exercise and parallel bars at last season’s national championships. Other USAG Championship competitors returning are junior
Nelson Jimenez, who took ninth on the vault, and junior
Rob Sander, who finished eighth on the high bar.
