Springfield, Mass. -- April 3, 2012 -- The Springfield College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Potter Field to the 4th-ranked team in the country, Eastern Connecticut State, by the scores of 4-1 and 4-0. With the wins, the Warriors are now 15-1, while Springfield drops to 8-7.

In the first game, one of the premier pitchers in New England, Molly Rathbun, a senior from Hebron, Conn., raised her record to 11-1. The loser was SC sophomore Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y.), now 4-4, who allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in five innings of work. Freshman Caisie Cadorette (Dartmouth, Mass.) came on to pitch two scoreless and hitless innings to finish up for the Pride.

Rathbun finished the afternoon with 11 strikeouts and gave up only one unearned run in the third inning. She walked only one.

The three SC hits were produced by sophomore center-fielder Christina Leader (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), sophomore left-fielder Ally Rivelli (North Kingstown, R.I.), and junior shortstop Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.).

Junior third baseman Arielle Cooper (Mystic, Conn.) got ECSU off to a great start by smashing a home run to straightaway center-field to lead off the game, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead through one inning.

In the second inning, ECSU added two more. Sophomore center-fielder Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and stole third. With two outs, she was then doubled home by sophomore shortstop Megan Godwin (Manchester, Conn.). Cooper then hit a soft liner to center which was bobbled. That scored Godwin, giving ECSU a 3-0 lead.

SC scored its lone run in the bottom of the third. Senior right-fielder Kelsey Dunn (Waterbury, Conn.) walked, stole second, and then came around on a throwing error by the third baseman. The run was unearned.

But ECSU came right back in the top of the fourth with one more. Brett led off with a hard-hit ball to second that went for an error. She then stole second and scored on a single to center by freshman pinch-hitter Shannon Martin (Wethersfield, Conn.).

In the second contest, the Warriors wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring three of their four runs in the opening inning. Brett connected for an RBI single to drive in Priscilla Alicea, before Stephanie Johnson cracked a two-RBI single to right field to make it a 3-0 ball game.

ECSU tacked on the final run of the game in the fifth inning. After Rathbun led off the frame with a booming double off the right field fence, Katie Sokoloski came in to pinch run. After to advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacqui Alvarado, Sokoloski beat out the throw to the plate as Brett connected on a pitch back towards Springfield's pitcher Jen Joseph.

Both Breann Joyce and and Kasey Kelly went 2-3 at the plate for the Pride, accounting for four of their six hits. For ECSU, Cooper and Johnson each produced a pair of hits in the victory.

Starter Christine Acker threw the first three innings, giving up three hits before Kassondra Silva, who earned the win, tossed the final four innings. Silva gave up three hits as well.

For Springfield, Cadorette took the loss as she gave up three unearned runs off five hits in two innings of work. Joseph struck out four in the final five innings, while also allowing on earned run.

Springfield will look to snap a four-game slide on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Western Connecticut State.
