Royce Leads Baseball Past Clark, 6-1
WORCESTER, Mass., April 3, 2003 -- Springfield College junior right-hander
Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) fired a six-hitter and struck out eight to pace the Pride's 6-1 win over Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game today.
Royce improved to 2-2 and hurled his second complete game in three starts. SC (5-9, 1-2 NEWMAC) ended a four-game losing streak. Clark dropped to 6-13 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
SC junior second baseman
Dan Samia (North Adams, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in, and senior first baseman
Brian Puchalski (South Deerfield, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Pride got on the board in the second inning. Freshman catcher
Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) ripped a one-out double and scored on sophomore leftfielder
Mike Judge's (Chatham, N.J.) RBI single. SC added a run in the third when sophomore rightfielder
John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.) drove home Puchalski with a single, and scored three times in the seventh inning. In that frame, Puchalski delivered a two-run double, and Beattie knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
That was plenty for Royce, who yielded just two hits after allowing a run in the third inning.
