Seven SC Track & Field Athletes Earn NEWMAC All-Conference Honors

Kelly Curtis Northampton, Mass. -- May 4, 2012 -- Spearheaded by Kelly Curtis, a number of Springfield College athletes earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference honors as a result of their performances at last Saturday's NEWMAC Track & Field Championships at Smith College.

Both the Springfield College men's and women's track & field teams placed third in their respective championships on April 28. The men finished third of six with 147 team points. The women finished third of nine with 107 team points.

On the women's side, Pride senior Kelly Curtis of Princeton, N.J. was named the NEWMAC Women's Field Co-Athlete of the Year. She shared that honor with Wheaton College's Ashley Dell Aira.

Curtis finished second in three events, making her a three-time Second Team All-Conference performer. She placed second in the long jump in 5.34 meters, second in the shot put in 11.17 meters, and second in the javelin in 38.82 meters.

In addition, freshman distance runner Nora Letendre (Northampton, Mass.) placed second in the 10,000 meter run in 39:35.38.

On the men's side, a total of seven SC competitors were named All-Conference by placing either first or second in the meet.

Four received First Team honors. They included junior Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) in the 10,000 meters in 31:26.52, junior Nolan Manley (Monson, Mass.) in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.14, junior Zach Pietras (Ludlow, Mass.) in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:17.15, and freshman Mason Durant (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the shot put in 14.65 meters.

There were three others who received Second Team All-Conference honors. They were grad student Brian Fuller (Ludlow, Mass.) in the 5000 in 15:20.54, sophomore Orlando Harvey (Chicopee, Mass.) in the shot put in 14.51 meters, and sophomore John Dayton (Bolton, Conn.) in the hammer throw in 49.29 meters.
