Mount Holyoke Edges Field Hockey, 2-1, In NEWMAC Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 9, 2003 – Mount Holyoke sophomore forward Katie Marquis (Danvers, Mass.) scored the only goal of the second half, but it was the game-winner as the third-seeded Lyons held off top-seed Springfield College, 2-1, to win the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Championship tonight at Springfield College’s Benedum Field.
Mount Holyoke (16-5) earns the NEWMAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. The ’03 championship marks the Lyons’ second in three seasons. Mount Holyoke defeated SC, 1-0, in the 2001 championship match.
Marquis, who had a goal in the semifinal win over MIT last night, registered the decisive tally with 29:51 left in the match. Senior back Lauren Weiner (Kensington, Md.) scored the other Lyon goal. Weiner had three goals in the two matches this weekend.
