BROCKPORT, N.Y., March 26, 2006 – Freshman Jackie Mazzola registered the top finish for any Springfield College athlete at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Division III Championships held at SUNY Brockport this past Friday and Saturday.
Mazzola, a first-year SC student from Framingham, Mass., finished with a combined score of 19.050 in the vault to claim 7th place, one spot shy of All-America status.
Springfield had four others compete in the nationals, including junior Jillian Silverman (Ipswich, Mass.), who was scheduled to compete in the vault, uneven parallel bars, and the balance beam; sophomore Kerry McGowan (East Lyme, Conn.) in the floor exercise; sophomore Cara Chadbourne (New Salem, Mass.) in the floor exercise; and freshman Kristen Fairburn (Salem, N.H.) in the uneven bars.
Silverman was injured during the vault, and was scratched from the other two events.
Two Springfield seniors were named to the NCGA National All-Academic Team. They included Brianna Jeffords (Amherst, N.Y) and Lyndsay Roy (North Andover, Mass.).
Thus, the women’s gymnastics season is over for the 2005-2006 campaign.
