Women's Swimming & Diving Captures Fifth-Straight NEWMAC Crown

WELLESLEY, Mass., Feb. 20, 2005– Springfield College senior All-American Megan Skinner (Acton, Mass.) won three individual events and was part of four first-place relays, as the Pride won its fifth-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship this past weekend at Wellesley.

SC took first place by posting 972 points, followed by MIT (625.50) and Wellesley (553.50) to round out the top-three teams in the 10-team field. All first-place finishers earn first-team all-NEWMAC honors, and runners-up are second-team all-conference picks.

Skinner set three NEWMAC-championship records, finishing first in the 500 free (5:02.00), 100 back (58.58) and 200 back (2:05.22). She also teamed with juniors Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) and Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.) to win the 200-free relay in a SC school-record and NCAA provisional qualifying time (1:39.50). The same foursome also took first place in the 400-free relay (3:34.99).

Senior Sarah Strout (Edgecomb, Maine) finished first in the 1,650 free (17:31.27) and joined Skinner, Phillips, and O’Hara, to finish first in the 800-free relay (7:49.94).

Freshman Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.) swam to victory in the 400 IM (4:43.90) and combined with Skinner, Phillips, and Hart to win the won the 400 medley-relay in 4:03.74.
