Springfield, Mass. - February 21, 2010 - Freshman Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) won the 133-pound weight classification to lead the Springfield College wrestling team to a second-place team finish at the 2010 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships in the Alumni Healthful Living Center at nearby Western New England College tonight.
By virtue of his winning that title, Grippi has automatically qualified for the upcoming NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships which will take place March 5-6 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Grippi won his championship match over the 133-pounder from Williams by a score of 7-4.
Also tonight, freshman Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), who had lost a match early on in this tournament, came all the way back to wrestle for the individual title in the 184-pound weight classification before losing.
Springfield scored 100.5 points to place second as a team. They entered the tournament ranked third in New England behind Williams and Johnson & Wales. Williams was the team winner, successfully defending the title it won last year when Springfield College hosted this tournament. The Ephs scored 128.5 points. Again, SC was second with 100.5, followed by Johnson & Wales and Wesleyan each with 95, and Bridgewater State at 88.5. Finishing sixth through 14th were: Southern Maine (82), Rhode Island College (78), Roger Williams (46), Plymouth State (42.5), host Western New England (41), Trinity (39.5), WPI (25), Coast Guard (15), and Norwich (2.5).
Besides Grippi placing first and Burns second, the Pride had five others place in the top six in their respective weight classifications. They were freshman Mike Rose (Patterson, N.Y.) 3rd at 125 pounds, junior Blaze Chatham (Walkill, N.Y.) 4th at 141, sophomore Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) 6th at 149, junior John Archambeau (Ludlow, Mass.) 3rd at 157, and junior Ron Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) fifth at heavyweight. All the above earned All-New England honors.
