Springfield, Mass. -- March 3, 2013 -- Despite finishing 1-2 on pommel horse behind John Zirna and Pat Ryther, the Springfield College men's gymnastics team fell to its counterparts from William & Mary, 408.050 to 400.400, this afternoon at SC's Blake Arena. Only two competitors participated in all six events, and they were both from the Tribe of William & Mary. Finishing 1-2 in the all-around were Daniel Potemski with a score of 83.200 and Keaton Ackerman at 78.700.
In this afternoon's competition, five competed and all five placed scores for each team, thus there was no margin for error for either squad.
Neal Courter had a fine meet for W&M as he captured three first-place finishes -- in the floor exercise (14.300), vault (14.150), and a tie with Potemski in the high bar (13.700). Landon Funiciello of W&M had a pair of firsts in the still rings (15.300) and in the parallel bars (14.800).
The other first-place finish was taken by Springfield's Zirna in the pommel horse (14.300).
Funiciello and SC junior Ryan Ponce had the most anticipated battle of the afternoon on still rings. Ponce is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in that category, while both are All-Americans. But it was Funiciello proving victorious (15.300) over Ponce (15.000) this afternoon.
Despite the loss, Springfield College Head Coach Steve Posner thought this could very well have been SC's "finest overall meet of the year."
