LEWISTON, Maine, May 3, 2003 – Springfield College recorded its second consecutive third-place finish at the 2003 Division III New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday at Bates College’s Russell Street Track and Field Complex

Jon Notary (Bethlehem, Pa.) took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.43. Sophomore All-American
Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took first in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 11 ¼ inches, and senior
Michael Heitkamp (Orwell, Vt.) won the discus (191 feet, 6 inches) and javelin (188 feet).
MIT won its seventh New England team championship, but first since 1990. Williams finished second, followed by Springfield College, Bowdoin College and Bates College.

Ken Klatka, just inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2011, enters his 37th season as head coach of the men’s track and field program in 2012-2013. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 442 wins, 144 losses, and two ties for an impressive .753 winning percentage. Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
