Men's Lacrosse Advances To Pilgrim Championship With 18-1 Win Over Mass. Maritime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 30, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore attackman
Dan Blinn (Longmeadow, Mass.) totaled a game-high six goals and added an assist to lead the Pride to a 18-1 win over Mass. Maritime Academy in the semifinals of the Pilgrim League Tournament this evening on Benedum Field. SC advances to play Western New England College in the championship game on Saturday (May 3) in a rematch of last season’s tournament finale, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament going to the winner.
Springfield (10-4) jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead and never looked back as Blinn scored three of the Pride’s first six goals. Junior attackman
Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) was credited with three goals and five assists, while freshman attackman
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) netted two goals to go along with two assists to lead SC to its eighth-straight victory.
Mass. Maritime sophomore goalie Dan Nelson (Winchester, Mass.) compiled 19 saves for the Buccaneers (7-9)
Springfield defeated visiting Western New England earlier this season, 16-3, on April 23. WNEC defeated the Pride twice last year, 15-13 during the regular season (which was SC’s first-ever Pilgrim League loss), and 17-16 in the Pilgrim League Tournament Final.
WNEC defeated Babson, 11-4, in the tournament’s other semifinal this afternoon.
