



Springfield, Mass. - September 7, 2009 - After leading Springfield to a 55-7 win over Fitchburg State on Saturday evening, the trio of Chris Kulcsar, Josh Carter, and Jarred Burrell were all honored by the Empire 8 for their efforts. Kulscar was named the Defensive Player of the Week, Carter the Offensive Player of the Week, and Burrell was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.Kulcsar led the Springfield defense which held Fitchburg State to -68 yards rushing and 10 total yards overall. A defensive end from Haworth, N.J. made eight tackles, seven of which were unassisted, and recorded three sacks for a total loss of 25 yards. The lone Falcons’ score was on a defensive touchdown in the 55-7 Pride victory.
Carter finished with 259 yards of total offense playing one half and just one series in the second half in Springfield's win. The Marlborough, Mass. product rushed 10 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns and completed three of four passes for 75 yards and two scores. Carter tossed scoring passes of 25 and 21 yards to junior wide receiver Tim Brady.
Burrell returned the opening kickoff of the game 53 yards to set up the first Springfield touchdown to become the first Special Teams Player of the Week in Empire 8 history. Burrell, who hails from Warwick, R.I. totaled 56 yards on four punt returns, averaging 14 yards per return.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
