Box ScoreSpringfield, Mass. - October 15, 2011 - Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the Springfield College men’s soccer team fell to Babson College, 3-1, in a New England Womens' and Men's Athletic Conference battle on Saturday afternoon on Brock-Affleck Field.
Babson improves to 10-2-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Springfield falls to 8-2-3 overall and 4-1 in the NEWMAC.
After a scoreless first half, the scoring picked up after the break. The Pride scored first in transition thanks to the teamwork of Jake Miskin and Alex Reilly. Miskin dribbled the ball up the center of the field and zipped a pass ahead to Reilly. Reilly took two dribbles and shaped his shot around one Babson defender and past the goalie on the left side to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers responded six minutes later. Forward Max Walker rifled a shot that Pride goalie Brett Bascom saved, but the rebound ricocheted right back to Walker who buried home the game-tying goal. After almost thirty minutes of game action with the score still knotted at one, the visitors took the lead for good. Off a Babson corner kick, Walker played set up man and found Bryan Rust on the left side, who then fired a shot into the right side of Springfield’s net. Babson would add an insurance goal a minute later. This time, Walker floated a pass to Ayo Iquagwu in perfect position for a header, giving the Beavers a 3-1 advantage that proved to be the final tally.
Babson outshot Springfield 18-8 for the game. Bascom recorded five saves to Beaver goalie Peter Crowley’s three.
The Pride are back in action Wednesday, October 19 at home versus Brandeis. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
