



Springfield, Mass. - March 30, 2009 - Springfield College juniors Steve Headley and Nikki Hay were both recognized for their outstanding efforts this past weekend at the Coast Guard Invitational as they were honored by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).Headley was selected as the NEWMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Hay was chosen as the NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Week as well as the NEWMAC Co-Field Athlete of the Week.
Headley opened up the outdoor season in impressive fashion as he qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 meters in his first race of the season. The junior set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time 10.54. He also anchored the Pride's 4x100 relay team that finished first in 42.21.
Hay continued her sensational junior campaign as she helped Springfield win the Coast Guard Invitational. Hay took first in the 100 meters (12.30) and the 200 meters (25.42)and anchored the 4x100 relay team that finished first in 49.72. Her time in the 100 met provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships. She also took first in the long jump (18-04.50), and triple jump (36-05.50).Her distance in the long jump met provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships.

Ken Klatka, just inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2011, enters his 37th season as head coach of the men’s track and field program in 2012-2013. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 442 wins, 144 losses, and two ties for an impressive .753 winning percentage. Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
