Ponce Earns USAG Collegiate Division Gymnast of the Week Honors

Ryan Ponce Indianapolis, Ind. - March 20, 2014 -Springfield College men's gymnastRyan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.)was named the USAG Collegiate Division Gymnast of the Week after his third-place finish at the NCAA Division I National Championships this past weekend at the Crisler Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Ponce, who smashed his old school record of 15.400 set in 2012 on the rings, posted a 15.550 on the final day at the championship meet, garnering Division I All-American Honors.

Reaching the third day was a historic moment in itself. Prior to Ponce's record-breaking performance, the last time a Springfield College men's gymnast had reached the individual finals of the NCAA Division I Championship was in 1984 whenJeff Coehlotook second on the rings to finish as the national runner up.

Ponce beat out athletes from Ohio State, Penn State, University of Iowa, University of Illinois, Stanford, and William and Mary.

Prior to April 13, in the over 100 years of history within the men’s gymnastics program at Springfield College, there had only previously been three Division I All-Americans. In 1961, Jeff Cardinali was the national champion on the parallel bars and and in 1965, Bob Elsinger collected a national championship on the pommel horse, while Coehlo took home All-America honors in 1984.
