HARTFORD, Conn. - March 25, 2008 – Sophomore RHP Jeremiah Bayer tossed eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball and senior SS Tom DiBenedetto led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a hit and scored the game’s only run, as the Trinity College Bantams survived a 1-0 baseball game against the visiting Springfield College Pride this afternoon in their home opener.
Trinity, ranked No. 12 in the nation, improves on its best-ever start to the season at 12-0, while the Pride falls to 3-6.
Trinity senior Chandler Barnard relieved Bayer, who fanned eight in eight innings and walked four while recording a no-decision, and yielded three hits with five strikeouts to record the victory on the mound. After DiBenedetto’s second hit of the game to start the bottom of the 11th frame, Springfield junior righty Jacob Feist (Allentown, Pa.) hit the next batter and walked the bases loaded. Pride senior LHP Mike Searles (East Patchogue, N.Y.) entered the game and handed Bantam sophomore Jack Abbott a free pass to give Trinity the win.
Trinity sophomore OF James Wood joined DiBenedetto with two hits, while senior first baseman Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) went 3-for-5 for Springfield. Pride junior LHP Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, Mass.) allowed five hits and struck out eight for the first five innings and Feist allowed just a single walk over five innings in relief prior to the 11th frame.
