Men's Lacrosse Travels To Middlebury For NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday
, May 4, 2003 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team will travel to Middlebury College on Saturday, May 10, for a second-round game of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 17-team tournament starts Wednesday, May 7, with a play-in round.
Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students.
The Pride (11-4) won its third Pilgrim Lacrosse League Championship and automatic bid to the national championship in the past four years Saturday, after defeating Western New England College, 14-4, in the tournament final on Benedum Field.
New England Small College Athletic Conference-champion Middlebury (14-1), the three-time defending Division III National Champion, defeated the visiting Pride, 11-7, on March 19 in the teams' most recent meeting. This will be the 24th time the two teams have played, with Middlebury owning a 16-7 record versus Springfield. In 2001, the national champion Panthers' lone blemish on their record was a 23-10 loss at the hands of the Pride.
In his 20th season at Springfield, coach Keith Bugbee
has led his teams to six appearances in the NCAA Tournament including the 1994 and 1995 Division II National Championship games. The 1994 squad won the program’s first national championship.
The Pride's last NCAA appearance came in 2001, where it defeated Eastern Connecticut, 11-9, in the first round, before falling at eventual national runner-up Gettysburg, 16-12. SC finished with a school-record 16-2 mark, and finished the season ranked fifth nationally.
