Springfield, Mass. - September 15, 2013 - The Springfield College men's soccer team captured its third-straight win with a 4-0 shutout over Western Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) found the back of the net twice in the second half to pace the Pride.
The Pride is now 4-1 on the year, while Western Connecticut dropped to 2-3.
Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) opened up the scoring just 3:08 into the game off a feed from Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.). Allen delivered a well-stright through ball to Malone from left flank, which Malone took a touch into the box before blasting a shot past West Conn goalie Bobby Strevel (Enfield, Conn.).
The Pride tacked on another goal in the 20th minute on a Jack Moran (Tolland, Conn) strike. After Austin Vico (Plymouth, Mass.) was fouled, Joey LaBella (Wethersfield, Mass.) sent a free kick into the box that Moran slammed into right side of net.
Sommer put the game out of reach for good with a pair of goals for the Pride just 3:34 apart. At the 68:23 mark, Sommer poked in a pass from Scott Saucier (Derry, N.H.). In the 72nd minute, Mike Desroches (Enfield, Conn.) crossed the ball to Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.), who then sent another crossing pass into the box. Sommer took a touch around the keeper and slotted a shot into the left corner for the game's final goal
For the game, Springfield owned a 16-6 advantage in shots, while the Colonials took six of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Strevel took the loss as he made five saves, while both Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Zachary Richard (Millbury, Mass.) each made a stop in the goal.
Springfield will now embark on a three-game road swing, which begins next Saturday at Wheaton in the Pride's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener.
