West Point, N.Y. -- January 15, 2010 -- The Springfield College men's gymnastics team felt good about themselves by finishing third of seven teams at the West Point Open in the 2010 opener for SC earlier this evening. In the process, the Pride defeated Navy for the first time in Head Coach Steve Posner's 28-year coaching tenure. Springfield scored 329.00 points, trailing only Penn State and Temple. But that was good enough to defeat both host Army as well as Navy.The team scores were as follows: Penn State (349.850); Temple (338.700); Springfield (329.000); Army (321.850); Navy (320.500); Brockport (263.800); and MIT (243.350).
Among individuals, Springfield advanced several to the individual finals to be held Saturday night. They included freshman Jimmy Pezzino (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the floor exercise (5th, 14.600), sophomore Joe Gianino (Burlington, Mass.) in the pommel horse (T9th, 13.500), and junior Mike Licari (Haverhill, Mass.) in the vault (11th, 15.000).
Senior co-captain Kyle Bartgis (Nottingham, Md.) had SC's highest finish of the night (2nd, 14.300) in the parallel bars.
Taking right up where he left off last year was sophomore Ty Evans (San Jose, Calif.), who placed third in the All-Around with a score of 82.850. Evans also finished seventh in the parallel bars (14.050), tied for eighth in the high bar (13.750), and tied for 12th in the still rings (13.750),
Also doing very well for the Pride was junior Josh Fox (Ellicott City, Md.). He finished sixth in the All-Around (81.950), eighth in the floor exercise (14.250), and tied for eighth in the high bar (13.750).
Entering his 31st season as head men's gymnastics coach, Dr. Steve Posner is recognized as one of the most outstanding gymnastics coaches in the East. Posner led the Pride to another successful season in 2012 and was named the EIGL Coach of the Year. Read more.
