Bernardston, Mass. -- October 20-21, 2012 -- Kyle DiFranco led his Springfield College golf team to a sixth place finish in the ECAC New England Division III Championships this past weekend at the Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, Mass. DiFranco finished in a tie for 17th among individuals.
RPI placed first among 14 teams competing with 630 strokes. The Engineers finished at 309-321=630, some 15 strokes over second-place Husson at 645. The remainder included Western New England (648), Endicott (649), Nichols (658), Springfield (675), Castleton State (682), Amherst (686), Elms (686), Westfield State (689), Wentworth (701), Newbury (732), SUNY-Cobleskill (740), and MCLA (791).
Medalists included Patrick Donahue of Western New England (78-74) and James Jackson of RPI (76-76), both finishing with a score of 152 (8 over par).
For SC, although he placed first among the Pride, DiFranco, a senior from East Longmeadow, Mass., had an up-and-down weekend. After one round of play on Saturday, Kyle was in first place among individuals with a 74. On Sunday, however, he shot a 91 for a grand total of 165. He thus finished in a tie for 17th overall at +21.
In second place for SC was graduate student Tom Sangeloty (Unionville, Conn.) with 88-80=168. That was good for a tie for 22nd.
In third was senior Tim Vollaro (Somers, Conn.) at 88-83=171, along with sophomore Adam Ziewacz (Simsbury, Conn.) at 92-79=171, each tied for 31st.
Finally, senior Christopher Vincent (Norwich, Conn.) was forced to withdraw and did not post a score.
Two weeks ago, the SC golf team won the New England Collegiate Conference team championship in Litchfield, N.H. As a result, SC will represent the NECC at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in Destin, Florida May 14-17, 2013.
Up next, SC will participate in the New England Championships at The Captains Course in Brewster in Cape Cod October 28-29 to wrap up the fall portion of its year.
