SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 14, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore forward Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal, her second of the night, with just 1:27 left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie as the 11th-ranked Pride edged visiting Connecticut College, 3-2, this evening at Benedum Field.
Kelleher scored the game’s first goal in the second minute of action (1:50) off a feed from sophomore forward Allie Eisele (Walton, N.Y.) to give SC the early advantage. The Camels (0-2) responded with a goal by senior forward Sage Shanley in the 11th minute of play (10:53) to tie the score at one apiece. That would prove to be the score heading into halftime.
The Pride started the second stanza much like it did the first, as senior forward Ashley Burns (North Falmouth, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal, her first of the season, just three minutes into the half (37:53). Conn. College would not go away quietly, however, as senior forward Katie Williams scored the tying goal with 13:54 left in the game (56:06) off a penalty corner.
The score would remain locked at two and appeared headed for overtime as SC received a penalty corner with just a minute and a half left. The Pride capitalized on its opportunity as Kelleher found the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. SC improves to 4-1 overall on the season with the victory.
The Pride will next host Amherst College in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening, September 20th, in a 7:00 p.m. start on Benedum Field.
