



Springfield, Mass. - January 24, 2009 - The Springfield College women's gymnastics team finished second in a tri-meet with Southern Connecticut State and Rhode Island College in Blake Arena on Saturday afternoon. The SCSU Owls took home first with a score of 188.40, followed by the Pride's 180.68, and RIC's 171.85.
During the meet, Springfield College raised breast cancer awareness in the following ways:
* the Springfield College women’s gymnastics team wore specially-made pink uniforms
* pink ribbons were handed out to all fans
* the arena was decorated with signs and pink balloons
* the tournament’s game program was in the color pink
and fans wore pink apparel.
Sophomore Justine Basley (Danielson, Conn.) of Southern Connecticut State took first place in the All-Around with a score of 37.300. Finishing in second place was Springfield freshman Carly Flynn (Franklin, Mass.) (see photo) at 36.400. And in third was RIC sophomore Julie Pitkin (Lee, N.H.) with a score of 34.450.
SCSU took control of the meet through three rotations, and cruised from there.
As for remaining individual results, winners included Springfield senior Jacqui Mazzola (Framingham, Mass.) on the vault (9.500); Basley of SCSU on the uneven parallel bars (9.700); junior Briana DiPinto (Woburn, Mass.) of SCSU on the balance beam (9.725); and DiPinto again on floor exercise (9.775).
