Northampton, Mass., April 27, 2003--Springfield College junior
Marisa Clapp (Charlton, Mass.) won the 800 meters (2:19.45), 1500 meters (4:44.56) and 5000 meters (18:07.77) to lead the Pride to a second-place finish at the 2003 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track and Field Championships Sunday at Smith College.
Clapp was named to the all-conference first-team in all three events. SC junior
Leyla Williams (Unionville, N.Y.) and freshman
Christina Davis (Orange, Conn.) were both named to the all-conference second team in the hammer and javelin, respectively.
On the men's side, senior
Adam Hughes (Bridgewater, Conn.) took first in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.77) and the 400 intermediate hurdles (55.19) to pace Springfield's second-place finish. Hughes' time in the high hurdles was a NEWMAC championship-meet record.
Junior
Brian Pearsall (Fairport, N.Y.) won the 800 meters (1:56.78) and sophomore All-American
Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) won the long jump (7.06 meters). SC's 4x100 meter relay team, which consisted of freshman
Billy King (Wilmington, Mass.), freshman
Chris Keyser (Newbury, Mass.), senior
Vinnie Mazzaferro (Brimfield, Mass.) and senior
Chris Roy (Fairhaven, Mass.), also took first place (43.31). Hughes and the other five SC event winners were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team.
The Pride's 4x400 relay team - junior
Art Fredericks (Wallingford, Conn.), Hughes, senior
Jon Notary (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Roy - were all named to the NEWMAC all-conference second team. Senior
Mike Notary (Bethlehem, Pa.) was a second team all-conference selection in the 800 meters, while sophomore
Matt Acciaoli (Warwick, R.I.) was named second team all-conference in the shot put.

Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
