Wrestling Competes in Opening Day of NCAA Regional Championship

Middletown, Conn. - March 1, 2014 - The Springfield College wrestling team has four wrestlers who have advanced to the semifinals after the opening day of the NCAA Division III Regional Championship hosted at Wesleyan University.

Reigning NCAA Division III National Champion Devin Biscaha (Jackson, N.J.) had a solid showing as he began his quest to get back to the NCAA Championship. The senior was victorious three times on Saturday, including a pair of wins by fall in 5:41 and 2:42. On Sunday, he'll go up against third-seeded Jorge Lopez of Williams in the semifinals.

At 149, Eric Hamrick (Collingswood, N.J.) grinded out three close decision wins to move on to the semifinals as he was won by the scores of 2-0, 2-1, and 3-1. Waiting for him in the Sunday's semifinals is sixth-seeded Eamonn Gaffney of Ithaca College.

Third-seeded Dylan Foley (Southborough, Mass.) had three wins on Saturday, including one by major decision, and is set to clash with second-seeded Collin Crowell of Roger Williams on Sunday in the semifinal.

At 197, fourth-seeded Hunter Ayen (Gouverneur, N.Y.) won two matches by decision to advance to the semifinals, where he'll meet top-seeded Joe Giaramita from Cortland.

Tyler Keane (Glastonbury, Conn.)dropped his second match of the day at 133, while Jacob Strohman (East Longmeadow, Mass.) had two early wins at 141 before falling to the No. 2 seed in his weight class. Michael Case (Cedar Run, N.J.) lost his first bout at 184, but went on to win two in the wrestle backs to stay alive.

Irakli Kakauridze (Howell, N.J.) opened up the weekend with a tremendous victory by knocking off the No. 2 seed in the 285 pound weight class, but lost his next bout to be forced into the consolation bracket. The sophomore picked up a pin in his next match and, along with the others Springfield wrestlers who lost on Saturday,will need to produce three wins on Sunday to advance to NCAA's.
