Women's Track and Field Captures Springfield College Invitational

Springfield, Mass. - April 21, 2012 -The Springfield College women’s track and field team won the Springfield Invitational at Blake Track on Saturday afternoon. The Pride finished with 178 points to win handily. AIC (147 points), Westfield State (134.5), Saint Rose (102), and Eastern Connecticut State (52) completed the top five in the team event.

Michelle Mirti, Colleen Brague, and Rhian Duggan were the top finishers for Springfield, as each won an event and earned first place points. Mirti took the title in the 5000 meter event in 19:05.22. Brague won the javelin throw with a toss of 131’7”. Duggan did her damage in the pole vault, reaching 10’8”.

Others that performed well for the Pride included Crystal Davis in the 100 meter dash. Davis took home second place with a time of 12.71 seconds. Gabriella Gaudreault placed third in the 400 meter event, crossing the finish line in 1:00.13. Jenn Kapinos added another second place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.81, and Nora Letendre placed second only to teammate Mirti in the 5000 at 19:21.87. Kelly Curtis continued her stellar senior year with a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.89 seconds. Abby Clark crossed right behind her in third with a time of 16.64 seconds.

Curtis also notched a third place spot in the long jump, leaping a distance of 16’1”, and second place in the javelin throw at 118’6”. Haley Regan took fourth in the event at 103’9” to give Springfield three of the top four javelin throws. Samantha Artz, Brianna Hill, and Duggan went 3-4-5 in the triple jump, as Artz measured 32’8.5”, Hill went 31’11.5”, and Duggan finished with a distance of 30’10.25”. Amber Judge and Michelle Angelo finished second and third in the shot put, with Judge tossing 37’1.25” and Angelo measuring in at 35’6.75”.

The quartet of Davis, Gaudreault, Kapinos, and Kelly Murphy won the 4x400 meter relay event, finishing in 4:00.93, more than 12 seconds clear of the runner up squad.

The Springfield women head to Northampton, Mass. next Saturday for the NEWMAC Conference Championships.
