Springfield, Mass. – March 26, 2009 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team erupted for a season-high 17 goals as it cruised past visiting Plymouth State, 17-4, on a rainy Thursday evening at Stagg Field. Alexandra Bazzano netted four goals and added an assist in the victory for the Pride.
With its fourth-straight win, Springfield improves to 5-2 on the year, while the Panthers drop to 0-4.
The Pride's constant pressure forced Plymouth into 15 turnovers in the opening half and limited the Panthers to just 4-14 on clears. The Pride took advantage of the visitors broken clears as Erin Doolan and Jackie Moscardelli found the back of the cage in the opening 2:31 of the game.
The Panthers responded with their first goal of the game as Kalie Judd took a feed from Jill Gerzabek and found the right side of the cage at the 24:52 mark.
However, the Pride was too much as it then rattled off the game’s next six goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Pride got goals from Jenn Zubkus, Brittany Massaro, Alexandra Bazzano, and a pair of tallies from Nicole Soucie to take a 8-2 half-time lead.
Bazzano buried a shot on the run just 36 seconds into the second stanza to kick start nine-straight unanswered goals by Springfield. The Panthers tallied the final two goals of the game in the final five minutes to make it a 17-4 final decision.
The Pride outshot the visitors, 32-13, and held the Panthers to just 8-for-24 on clears.
Bazzano finished with five points off four goals and an assist, while Doolan added a hat trick and one assist. Soucie also chipped in with three goals on the night. Moscardelli continued her impressive freshman year with a goal and an assist to go along with three ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Nine different players scored in the game for SC. Lauren McAulay earned the win in goal as she made four saves in 30 minutes of work.
Springfield returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it opens up New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play as it travels to take on MIT at 2:00 pm.
