Field Hockey Tops WNEC In Shootout;
Will Face Hartwick In SC Invitational Championship
Sept. 7, 2002 – Springfield College junior Maylese Leyva (Harwich, Mass.)
and sophomore Kim Stevens (Knox, Maine)
scored one goal each as the Pride outlasted Western New England College, 3-2, in a shootout in the opening match of the SC Field Hockey Invitational at Benedum Field this afternoon.
The Pride advances to Sunday’s 1:00 p.m. championship match against Hartwick, which was a 4-2 winner over Eastern Connecticut. The consolation match will be played at 11 a.m.
Junior Chelsey Perham (Walpole, Mass.)
put the Golden Bears in front 1-0 at 26:12 of the first half. SC answered at 25:52 of the second half when Stevens scored on a penalty shot. Leyva gave SC a 2-1 lead on a goal at 19:36. WNEC sent the game into overtime on a goal by junior Nicole DeRosa (Utica, N.Y.).
The teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods before the match was decided in a shootout, where the Pride outscored WNEC, 3-1.

first half to lead the Hawks to the 5-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State and their fourth-straight
appearance in the SC Invitational final.
