Giannelli/Boyd Win Consolation "B" Finals at the Stonehill Doubles Invitational

Joe Giannelli Easton, Mass. -- September 8, 2012 -- The Springfield College duo of Joe Giannelli and Jesse Boyd earned the consolation "B" championship at the Stonehill Doubles Men's Tennis Invitational last Saturday. A total of three doubles teams competed for the Pride.

Ben Burnap, a senior from Westerly, R.I., and Kyle Mersereau, a sophomore from Brunswick, Me., competed in the "A" Flight for SC. Giannelli, a junior from Watertown, Conn., and Boyd, a senior from Bolton, Conn., competed in the "B" Flight. And Zac Goldstein, a senior from Shelton, Conn., and Cody Rodrigues, a sophomore from Westfield, Mass., competed in the "C" Flight.

The highlight of the day for the Pride was winning the consolation "B" championship. In that final match, Giannelli and Boyd defeated Sam McKay and Tim Luz of Eastern Nazarene University, 8-5. Earlier in the day, Giannelli and Boyd had lost to Chris Martin and Phillip Klados of host Stonehill, 8-6. Giannelli and Boyd then turned it around to defeat Colin Gunning and James Diamentopoulos of Salve Regina, 8-4, before winning the title.

In the "A" Flight, Mersereau and Burnap won their initial match by defeating Aaron Isch and Ken McCormack of Salve Regina, 8-2. But then Austin Stedman and Sam Jon of Eastern Nazarene defeated SC's number one pairing, 9-7.

In the "C" Flight, Goldstein and Rodrigues lost their first match-up to Joseph Zucchi and Michael Hanna of St. Anselm, 8-4. In the first consolation match, Goldstein and Rodrigues defeated Lucas Donoway and Joe Berger of Curry, 8-2. But the SC duo then fell to Tyler Perron and Kevin Paterno of Eastern Nazarene, 8-3.

On Sunday, September 16, the Pride will host RPI in a dual at 1 pm at the newly-renovated Appleton Courts.
