No. 10 Wrestling Sweeps No. 16 Cortland, Bridgewater State, Wesleyan

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 6, 2004 – Springfield College senior Tom Medonis (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.) won three matches apiece to lead the No. 10 Pride to a three-match sweep this afternoon in Blake Arena. Springfield defeated No. 16 SUNY Cortland 28-10, Bridgewater State, 41-4 and Wesleyan University, 43-6, in its opening competition of 2004.

Medonis, ranked No. 1 in New England in the 197-pound division, improved his season record to 19-4 with a pair of pins and a technical fall on the afternoon. Viglione, also ranked No. 1 in New England, ran his record to 23-3 in the 174-pound weight class.

Junior Scott Fay (Danbury, Conn.) ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in New England in the 285-pound weight class, registered two wins to increase his record to 18-3 this winter. Sophomore Peter Marques (Massapequa, N.Y) (133), senior Mike McWilliams (Newton, N.J.) (184), junior Jerard Melito (Medford, N.Y) (157) and freshman Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) (141) each notched a pair of wins as well for Springfield (4-0).
