Men's Soccer Cruises to 5-0 Conference Win Over Clark

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 5, 2013 - Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) led the Springfield College men's soccer team with a goal and three assists as it defeated Clark University, 5-0, on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Sommer notched three assists and a goal in the win, helping Springfield improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC. Clark falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

It's the first time since 1968 that the Pride has tallied eight wins through the first 10 games of the season.

Sommer assisted the game's first goal, scored by Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) in the seventh minute. Sommer fed the ball to Malone, who was darting down the center of the field. Malone blasted a shot past the goalie into the right side of the net for a quick, 1-0 lead.

Just 45 seconds later, in the eighth minute, Sommer tallied a goal of his own, assisted by Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.). Fowler found Sommer all alone, and the junior made no mistake beating the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

John Mankus (Vernon, Conn.) gave the Pride a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 26th minute. Sommer and Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.) had the assists as Sommer sent a pass out to Allen on the right wing, who then sent a long cross to the back post where Mankus headed in the strike.

The Pride took a 4-0 lead before the half ended thanks to Matt Dickmann (Paxton, Mass.) heading in a goal off a service from Sommer.

The final Springfield goal came with 32:20 remaining in the game when sophomore Austin Vico (Plymouth, Mass.) dribbled the ball upfield, centered a pass to Dickmann, who one-touched it to senior midfielder Scott Morneault (Bristol, Conn.). Morneault took a few touches before hitting a low shot across the keeper into the left side of the net, putting the Pride up 5-0.

Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) combined for four saves in goal for Springfield. Alistair Richardson and Alfonso Alvarez had seven saves for Clark.

Springfield will play on back-to-back days, traveling to Elms College on Sunday for a non-conference match at 4:00 p.m. Clark hosts Mount Ida on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
