



Springfield, Mass. -- October 6, 2009 -- Springfield College remains No. 2 in the latest New England Division III football poll, ranked only behind 2-0 Trinity and just ahead of 4-1 Plymouth State. The Pride owns a record of 3-1 following its 43-16 win at Utica last Saturday.This is the third week of the poll. Springfield was ranked No. 1 after one week, but has now been ranked No. 2 behind Trinity in each of the past two weeks.
Trinity has garnered 166 points, including 15 of 17 first-place votes. In second is Springfield with 144 points and one first-place vote. In third is Plymouth State with 140 points and one first-place vote. The remainder of the top 10 includes Amherst (2-0) with 116 points, WPI (3-2) with 70 points, Curry (3-2) with 68 points, Framingham State (4-1) with 67 points, Williams (1-1) with 65 points, Bowdoin (1-1) with 33 points, and Maine Maritime (3-1) with 26 points.
Springfield was ranked #1 in the nation in rushing offense (430.2 yards per game) entering the Utica contest this past Saturday. Among individuals, sophomore QB Josh Carter (Marlborough, Mass.) was ranked #8 in rushing, while senior Jarred Burrell (Warwick, R.I.) was ranked #6 in punt returns and #7 in kickoff returns entering that game. Burrell improved his averages by quite a margin. The latest rankings will be revealed on Wednesday.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
