2004 Women's Soccer Season Preview
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Fifth-year head coach
John Gibson’s Springfield College squad looks to take the next step towards an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2004 with a veteran group that has played in the NEWMAC Championship match two of the past three seasons.
Eight of the Pride’s top-nine scorers from last season return in 2004. High-scoring seniors
Molly Desroches (Belcertown, Mass.) (8 goals, 3 assists), who was named an All-NEWMAC selection for the second time in three years, and
Jessica Kovacs (Dalton, Mass.) (7 goals, 3 assists) return as the club’s top-two offensive threats. They join seniors
Jaqueline Landers (Niantic, Conn.) and
Leeann Morris (Sutton, Mass.), and sophomores
Annemarie Goodwin (Springfield, Mass.) and
Amanda Nealon (East Falmouth, Mass.) on an offense that scored three-or-more goals on seven occasions last season, including a 6-1 win over Smith College in the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals.
Senior captain
Meg McTear (Barre, Vt) leads a young but talented midfield that features sophomores
Allison Barendse (Utica, N.Y.),
Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.),
Cari Capodiece (Kensington, Conn.),
Cara Reilly (Lenoxdale, Mass.) and
Hallie Vail (Greely, Maine). In the backfield, junior captain
Nora Clark (Springfield, Mass.) anchors a defense that will include juniors
Courtney Goetz (Flemington, N.J.) and
Elisabeth Macrum (Acton, Maine), along with sophomore
Jessica Denehy (Whately, Mass.).
Junior keeper
Christina Davis (Orange, Conn.), who registered six shutouts in ’03, is the leading candidate after starting all but one match, but sophomore
Lila Sussman (Weston, Conn.) is waiting in the wings.
