



Springfield, Mass. -- April 17, 2010 -- The Coast Guard Academy men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles, and went on to defeat their counterparts from Springfield College, 6-3, indoors this afternoon at the Springfield College Field House. With the loss, SC falls to 4-11 overall, and 1-4 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
Coast Guard improves its overall record to 9-8, and its NEWMAC record to 3-2.Springfield won at No. 3 doubles, and at No. 5 and 6 singles. Junior Doug Nickerson (Falmouth, Me.) was the only double winner for the Pride, winning at both No. 3 doubles with sophomore Zach O'Leary (Westboro, Mass.) and at No. 5 singles. Senior Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, Conn.) was an SC winner at No. 6 singles.
Coast Guard won at the top four singles slots, including at No. 1, as sophomore Greg Mitchell (Keene, N.H.) defeated senior Trevor Romanzi (Bay Shore, N.Y.), 6-2, 7-5.
Springfield has assured itself of the No. 5 seed, and will open up the NEWMAC Tournament in a quarterfinal match on the road on Thursday, Apr. 22.

Toby Coffin G’01, enters his second year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College. Coffin, who has coached at numerous high schools in the area, will look to build a program which will contend for a conference crown.
